A Different Kind of Soulslike
Elden Ring: Nightreign isn't Elden Ring 2, and FromSoftware isn't trying to pretend it is. Instead, Nightreign is a bold experiment — a co-op roguelite built atop the bones of the Lands Between, designed around three-player squads facing down escalating threats across condensed, high-stakes runs.
The Core Loop
Each run takes place over three in-game nights. During the day, your squad explores a procedurally modified version of the Elden Ring map — gathering runes, looting gear, and defeating field bosses. At night, a shrinking ring of darkness closes in (yes, a bit like a battle royale), pushing players toward a central showdown with a powerful night lord boss.
It sounds chaotic on paper. In practice, it creates a tense, focused rhythm that's immediately compelling.
Nightfarers — The New Characters
Rather than building your own character from scratch, Nightreign uses pre-defined classes called Nightfarers, each with unique abilities and passive traits. The Duchess is a nimble assassin with a clone ability; the Wylder plays like a classic Elden Ring knight with a grappling hook twist. Each Nightfarer feels distinct, and team composition matters more than in the base game.
Difficulty and Balance
If you've bounced off Soulslike games before, Nightreign may not convert you — the bosses are unrelenting and punishing. However, the co-op safety net makes wipes feel less devastating. Revival mechanics and shared resource systems soften the edges without removing the tension that makes FromSoftware games so satisfying.
Early Verdict
Nightreign is a genuinely fresh take on the Elden Ring universe. It's not for everyone, but for Soulslike veterans and co-op fans looking for a structured challenge, it delivers in spades. We need more time with it, but the early signs are very promising.
